Project plan:

Phase I

  • Coordination with the District Administration and Coimbatore Corporation officials.
  • Data on the student population in the various schools collected.
  • For every 500 students two teacher volunteers are identified.

Phase II

  • Organizing the printing and stationary required for conducting the programme.
  • A communication letter printed and circulated to all the parents. This is the best mode for communicating the benefit of a meaningful project to the public at large.

Phase III - At Sankara Eye Centre Coimbatore.

  • Orientation and training for the teacher volunteers conducted for half a day at Sankara Eye Centre Coimbatore.
  • Screening kits and recording stationary are distributed to the Teacher Volunteers.

Phase IV - At the School Level

  • Preliminary vision screening of students conducted by the teacher volunteers.
  • Normal students are given a green card indicating the visual status, while defective students receive a red card which carries a message to the parents.
  • Around 10% of the student population screened are identified with visual defects by the Teacher Volunteers by this screening.

Phase V - Visit by the Rainbow Bus.

  • Identified students are examined at the Rainbow Bus parked in the School Campus as per a pre-planned schedule. The parents are encouraged to accompany the students.
  • Up to refraction and glass prescription, the entire procedure would be completed in the Rainbow Bus itself by the Optometrist.
  • Glasses prepared subsequently would be handed over to the students by Rotary members.
  • Children selected for surgeries, further investigations or management would be referred to the Base Hospital.

Phase VI - At Sankara Eye Centre Coimbatore.

  • Those who would benefit from surgical interventions as in the case of Congenital Cataract, Developmental Cataract, Traumatic Cataract, Congenital Glaucoma, Corneal Opacities, Ptosis and squint would be provided the surgeries free of cost by Sankara Eye Centre, if the child belongs to BPL Family and for children from affordable families, the parents would bear the cost.

Phase VII

  • Feedback provided to Rotary, the Corporation and the District Administration on the outcome programme.
  • Certificate of appreciation issued to the teacher volunteers.
  • Cross referrals to other specialties wherever required.
  • Creating a data bank
