Sankara Eye Hospital is a unit of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Medical Trust, a secular charitable eye care Institution.
Blessed and inspired by the Sankaracharyas of Kanchi, this Institution has a track record of 40 years of service to the needy.
The thrust area of activity is community eye care – high quality readily available eye care at the door steps of rural India.
Sankara has so far performed over 1.5 Million totally free eye surgeries for the benefit of the rural poor and presently performing over 500 free eye surgeries every day across the Country.
Sankara functions on a unique 80 : 20 model, wherein 80% of the beneficiaries are the rural poor, who get totally free eye care and the balance 20% are the rich and the affluent sections of the society who would pay for their treatment, thereby cross-subsidizing the free eye care services.
Sankara is establishing replicable and sustainable models of Sankara Eye Hospitals across India in every state under the Programme “Vandematharam“
Presently there are 10 Sankara Eye Hospitals in different states of India and our next four Eye Hospitals are coming up in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Maharashtra.
The group has a total bed strength of 2000 exclusively dedicated to eye care and a total human resource of 1800.

It was Rotary Coimbatore Central, which brought in the 3H Programme of Rotary International, way back in 1990 for Sankara Eye Hospital to initiate the Gift of Vision Rural outreach eye care as a joint programme. Today, Gift of Vision is a pan India movement, thanks to the initiatives from Rotary Coimbatore Central. Many Global Matching Grants have been acquired by Rotary Coimbatore Central to execute the joint service activities with Sankara Eye Hospital.
